Welcome to episode 8 of the Roseland Podcast

I’m Chloe, your host, and this week on the podcast we’re focusing on the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, and what life on the Roseland was like during the war, under the D Day preparations, and on VE Day itself.

VE Day 75th Anniversary

Yesterday, 8th May, was the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. Whilst the Roseland wasn’t the most affected area of the country, or even the county during WW2, plenty went on here.

We weren’t able to do any interviews with anyone who was actually there at the time, so instead, I’m chatting with the next best thing - 2 gentleman who’ve been collecting the stories of what did happen from those who were there.

First up we’ve got Peter Teague from St Just sharing tales of bombings, and VE Day itself. We started by talking about the home guard.

INTERVIEW

Stories there that I expect many of you didn’t know a thing about!

If we go a little bit further back we come to an event which I think everyone must know the Roseland was involved in, and which was crucial on the path to VE Day - D Day.

And there was only one person we could speak to about that - Pete Newman formerly of Tolverne.

INTERVIEW

We’ll finish off our VE Day episode with this poem specially written for the anniversary by Alan Durham from Tregony (our guest in episode 2 if he sounds familiar!)

POEM

Be kind and stay safe.

About the Podcast

Roseland Podcast
Updates on services, art, culture, history, sport(!), to help us feel less isolated
An audio podcast to help the communities on the Roseland stay connected during these interesting times.

Hopefully including:
- updates on services (like takeaways and food deliveries) from local businesses
- chats with interesting local people about interesting things
- updates on what people are doing to help each other

I suspect it will evolve as the weeks roll by...

NOT a source of medical advice! or politics.

Aim is to help those living on the Roseland peninsula feel a little less isolated.
Roughly speaking that means St Mawes, St Just-in-Roseland, Gerrans & Portscatho, Philleigh & Treworthal, Ruan Lanihorne, Tregony, Veryan and Portloe and all the little villages and homes in-between.
